Epona

Background

Fleur of Bonisagus's shield grog Epona was born Elena d'Alvernha in the hills near Orcières, in Provence. She had an older brother. A few years ago, her family tried to push her into an arranged marriage, but Elena (who was, and is, not interested in men) refused. Politely at first, but as her family grew more insistent, she grew more adamant until she finally had enough and left her home. She had heard rumours of a place that welcomed people who were different, so she traveled the almost 400 miles (about 625 km) to Andorra where, after exhibiting her skills with the bow, she was granted a spot in the turb.

She had only been there a few weeks when she met Vibria's maid Lucia, and they soon become friends. And, before long, they became much more than friends. She was content to serve as an archer in the covenant's turb and spend her free time with her girlfriend. But when Vibria's tower was damaged in a laboratory accident in 1235, and Vibria took an indefinite sabbatical shortly thereafter, the maga Fleur of Bonisagus took both Epona and Lucia into her household.

Spring of 1236 found Epona mysteriously pregnant, after she had escorted Fleur on an expedition into the Caves of Entropy. She never did really find out how it happened, as she would swear that she's never lain with a man in her life. As best as she can figure from what Fleur told her later, somehow the pregnancy that was to have been Fleur's from her demonstration for Azaxaza somehow got…shunted into Epona. Nine months later (in Winter 1237), her son Mayhew was born. Although things were rough between Epona and Lucia for a few weeks after, they have since patched things over, are closer than ever, and are doing their best to raise their son.

In Autumn of 1236, Epona was offered, and accepted, a commission as a Warrant Officer for the Andorran Guard: Huntmistress and Archer. Except for a few weeks when Mayhew was born, and a brief adventure with Fleur to hunt the beast in the regio in her garden, she has served faithfully since. She has continued to serve as Fleur's shield grog when needed, but spends the bulk of her time as Huntmistress and Archer. (She is still a rubbish teacher, but that hasn't deterred her from passing along what she knows to her fellow Guards.)
